Energy Vocabulary

Energy- the ability to cause change

Kinetic energy- the energy of an object due to its motion

Potential energy- the energy of an object due to its position, condition, or chemical composition

Energy transformation- when energy changes from one form into another form

Law of conservation of energy- energy cannot be created or destroyed

Electric potential energy- the energy needed to move a charge against an electric field

Elastic Potential - energy stored as a result of stretching an elastic object

Gravitational potential - energy that is a result of an object’s position

Chemical energy- bonds between atoms break and new bonds are formed

Temperature- a measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles in a substance

Thermal energy- total kinetic energy of all particles in a substance

Heat- the energy transferred from an object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower temperature

Conduction- the transfer of energy as heat from one substance to another through direct contact

Convection- the transfer of energy as heat by the movement of a liquid or gas

Radiation- transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
